Twin Peaks has a worthy Finnish successor
The plot of Deadwind follows Sofia Karppi, a police inspector from Helsinki who is struggling to rebuild her life after a personal tragedy: the death of her husband. As soon as she returns to her job, she becomes involved in the investigation of the murder of a woman linked to a wind energy company. Accompanied by a rookie partner, Karppi must unravel a web of secrets that go far beyond what they seem at first glance.
But it doesn’t end here. Each new season of Deadwind introduces a different case, taking the necessary time to explore the emotional scars of its main characters, especially Karppi, who carries the weight of her loss while dealing with the horrors her job brings with it.
If there is something that characterizes Nordic thrillers, it is their ability to convey a sense of isolation and mystery, and Deadwind achieves this perfectly. Set in the gray and cold landscapes of Finland, the series uses the city of Helsinki and its surroundings as another character. The cinematography highlights the muted and dark tones, creating an atmosphere that combines the unsettling and the melancholic.
In fact, the very cover of the series is a nod to Twin Peaks: a young woman wrapped in plastic in bluish tones reminiscent of the iconic Laura Palmer case. But beyond the visual similarities, Deadwind has its own personality, with a meticulous pace that gradually draws you in, revealing its secrets at the right moment.
